The UK seems to be the only place that has ramblers, whereas hiking seems a bit of a foreign activity. The Oxford Dictionary defines rambling as, "the activity of walking in the countryside for pleasure" which rather intriguingly suggests that walking is not always associated with enjoyment!Hiking is defined as, "a long walk or walking tour" which definitely has the ring of sodden boots, sore feet and a large drink in a warm pub associated with it.

Traditionally dating and making new friends is carried out at parties and in pubs, but these activities don't necessarily attract many ramblers and walkers keen on the outdoors.
Online dating allows keen walkers and ramblers to find other walking friends and partners in a safe and self-selecting environment.
